Sanctuary Notes

Short, useful reminders for a comfortable stay.

Check-in and checkout

Unless your Airbnb booking lists different times, plan for check-in after 4:00 PM and checkout by 11:00 AM. Your confirmation is the final reference for door codes and exact windows.

Guest guidelines

  • No parties, events, or unregistered overnight guests.
  • Please keep food out of the bedrooms and beds.
  • Pets are welcome when house broken, with a maximum of two pets.
  • Please pick up after pets and keep pet food sealed.
  • Only toilet paper goes in the toilets. Septic systems clog easily.
  • Please do not use kiddie pools, blow-up pools, or anything that heavily draws on the well.
  • The pond is for looking, not swimming. It is home to koi and is not safe for people or pets.
  • Please be respectful of the golf course next door. Children should not go on the course unattended.

Bedroom 1

  • The kitchen is fully equipped, including cookware, serving pieces, spices, oil, coffee, and tea.
  • Dishwasher pods are under the sink. Please keep wooden items out of the dishwasher.
  • The dining table seats about 10. Game room stools can be used for extra seating.
  • Grill utensils are stored on the back side of the kitchen island near the refrigerator end.
  • The washer and dryer are between the kitchen and main floor bathroom. Please empty the lint trap after each use.

Water, Wi-Fi, and TV

  • The small tap on the right side of the kitchen sink provides filtered drinking water. It may look cloudy for a few seconds because of oxygen from the well.
  • A five-gallon water dispenser is also available in the kitchen. Refills can be made at the Catskill Walmart.
  • Wi-Fi network: Eero79. Password: 9173533866.
  • There are TVs in the living room, primary bedroom, and downstairs game room, with streaming options available.

Heat, cooling, fireplace, and grill

  • Only one thermostat controls forced-air heating and cooling. The other thermostats control radiant floor heat.
  • The lower level has radiant heat only.
  • If it is below 60 degrees outside, please do not run the AC. Open windows instead.
  • The indoor gas fireplace is seasonal, usually mid-October through April. Use the Gas fireplace steps below to light and shut it down safely; leave only the pilot on before bed.
  • Use the outdoor firepits carefully, keep fires contained, and fully extinguish them when done.
  • Please turn off the propane tank after grilling.

Outdoor highlights

A few favorite outings near Red Tara Sanctuary.

Golf next door

A golf course sits right beside our lawn. Please treat it as private property: walk only where invited, keep voices low for players, and do not practice swings or hit balls onto the fairway. Children should never be on the course unsupervised, and please avoid using the course after hours.

Ski resorts

Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain are both classic Catskills ski areas within easy driving distance for a winter day trip. Check each resort for lift tickets, lesson schedules, and snow conditions before you go.

Kaaterskill Falls

New York State's tallest cascading waterfall is a memorable outing. Use only designated DEC parking (Laurel House Road, Scutt Road, or North-South Lake area). Do not park on Route 23A or roadside pull-offs where prohibited. Trails can be icy, crowded, and steep in places; swimming near the falls is dangerous.

Won Dharma Center

Won Dharma Center in Claverack (about 25 minutes south) is an open community focused on mindfulness: meditation, retreats, yoga, qigong, and workshops, with trails and wide-open views of the Catskills on hundreds of acres. Program schedules change seasonally—see wondharmacenter.org for dates and registration.

Menla

Menla Retreat & Dewa Spa (Phoenicia) is a Tibetan-inspired wellness and retreat center in the Catskill Forest Preserve: spa treatments, yoga and meditation programs, trails, and seasonal retreats. Visit menla.org for reservations and schedules.
